Domain Name Scam – Alert

tips Domain Name Scam AlertThe scammer-spammers are at it again

I must have received 20 of these emails today.  Essentially, it looks like a domain name renewal notice you might see from your registrar along with an offer to submit your site to search engines.  Do NOT reply or honor their request to fax your agreement back to them.

This is what the email looks like…

domain scam Domain Name Scam Alert

This is a scam. Not only are they charging you 700% more for to renew your domain name, but search engine submission of your domain is a waste of time and could actually cost you some points with some engines.

My guess is that they are hoping that large companies will see the notice and pay the bill without taking the time to review the ‘offer’, or verify where their domain names are registered. Regardless of their game plan, this is a con.

The devil’s in the details and if you read the fine print you’ll see that they protect themselves from prosecution by stating, “This is NOT an invoice/bill and you are not obligated to pay unless you wish to order the above named services.”

Worse still, they would own your domain name and retrieving ownership down the road will cost you time and money.  They are counting on you not being an informed consumer.
