Internet – What’s Changed since 1993?

This video (by today’s standards) is a hoot!  Watch as Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric talk about some newfangled invention called the Internet.  Can you even imagine what life today would be like without the Internet?

I remember those days very well.  In 1993 I co-founded of one of America’s first ISPs in Dallas Texas and our biggest challenge was explaining to people what the Internet was and the promise it held for doing business.  The web of ’1994 BG (before Google) bears little resemblance to what we see today.  The basic concepts of communicating with people and marketing online haven’t really changed all that much, but the “how to” is a drastically different story.

In 1998 Macmillan published my first book called “The Complete Small Business Internet Guide“. Four years after that Today Show’s broadcast, people were still trying to get their arms around this Internet thing and how it could benefit businesses.

Here we are eighteen years later and businesses are now struggling to understand why they need search engine optimization (SEO) and how to leverage social networking opportunities. The basics of online marketing may be similar, but the mechanics of making this happen are drastically different.  As a result, I finally published my sequel called the “SEO & Social Media Marketing Guide“.

If you manage a business website and you want to increase traffic and your results in search and you want to network and communicate with customers and prospects effectively, download my book and start making things happen.  I’m so sure that it will help you that I offer a 60-day money back guarantee so you have nothing to lose…and everything to gain.

PS: Oh yeah, and a special thanks to Al Gore for inventing this Internet of ours icon smile Internet Whats Changed since 1993?

Super Bowl XLV and Your Business

super bowl xlv Super Bowl XLV and Your BusinessThe Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers are headed to Dallas on February 6th. to square off in Super Bowl XLV.  This is America’s biggest sports day, and the reason for a worldwide celebration.

Small business owners compete in their Super Bowl every day they turn on the lights. No fanfare, no week of media interviews and the only recognition they receive is when they hand out paychecks to employees. Most small businesses wouldn’t have it any other way. The freedom and self satisfaction of building a business is why they fight for new customers and scramble for new sales.

Unlike pro sports teams, small businesses don’t have big budgets – especially for things that are not customarily part of their core business strategy. Most will admit that their website should play a larger part in their marketing plan, but few have the time, the staff or the budgets available to capitalize on their most underutilized marketing asset.

How to win the big game!

Helping small businesses win on their home turf is why I wrote the book, the “SEO & Social Media Marketing Guide”. This is a virtual playbook of tactics and maneuvers a business can use to score, and gain home field advantage.

Isn’t it ironic that doing business is so often compared to sports competition…and war?  The concepts are basically the same, a contender fights for new ground or to subdue a competitor and if successful, the outcome is declared a victory.

If you are a small business and you realize that your online marketing efforts could use some coaching, step up to the Pros and download your new playbook today.  You won’t need to spend a season practicing or a fortune on building a new team.  Your website can be fine-tuned to attract ready-to-buy customers and you new coach just happens to be a seasoned pro.

Cable TV suffers biggest decline in 30 years

So why is cable TV a newsworthy topic on an Internet marketing blog?

Because it illustrates another factor in the accelerating trend of consumers going online for virtually everything they want; news, weather, sports, movies, games, shopping, banking, investing and networking with family, friends and business associates. (See report from Financial Times)

Let’s face it, small businesses struggling to survive in this challenging economic climate simply don’t have the time to keep abreast of trends in technology.  The paradox is that occasionally those technological developments may offer the one thing that could cause the business to thrive.

In other words, if you knew that hordes of potential customers were to congregate in one place for a public event, would you not consider an advertising buy that would reach those targeted prospects?  Of course you would, it makes sound business sense and is good utilization of your advertising budget.

Small Business Survival Plan

survival plan Cable TV suffers biggest decline in 30 yearsThis is exactly what a well-implemented search engine optimization and social networking  plan can do for your business.  When a prospect searches for your products or services, your website appears in the organic search results.  This is the same as advertising your message to that horde of potential customers we mentioned above except they’re not all in one place or searching at the same moment.

The BIG difference between advertising to the crowd and targeting that one buyer is cost.  It takes serious money to blast an advertising message to the general public, but it only takes some time and $39 to be able to attract prospects at the exact moment they are ready to buy.  This is what SEO and Social Media Marketing can do for your business; help you attract serious buyers without needing to spend the money advertising to the drive-by public.

My book, the SEO & Social Media Marketing Guide, is geared to small business.  It’s written in plain English, not technobabble.  It explains what you need to do and why it is important, and then shows you step-by-step how to perform each task.

Possibly the most important benefit of SEO is that once in place, it can literally work forever.  I have websites that get thousands and thousands of unique visitors every month without spending one penny on advertising or promotion.  Once you have optimized your web presence you can focus on the other things that need attention, like running your business.  Or maybe you might want to watch some TV.

Small Business Internet Marketing

SEO for Small Businesses

When a prospective client contacts me, they almost always have the same motivation, and usually the same questions.  It almost seems as though someone is circulating a talking-points script, but the reality is that almost all small businesses experience the same internet local marketing challenges.

internet local marketing Small Business Internet MarketingThey will tell me that their “websites aren’t showing up in search results” and eventually they will start asking questions about “social media for business“.  Is it worth while, do they need to be doing something, what should they do and how do they begin?  That pretty much summarizes the average call.  They are looking for answers to problems that are not part of their normal course of business.

Years of working with small businesses and understanding their problems with marketing their businesses online was the driving force behind creating the “SEO & Social Media Marketing Guide“.

If you need to optimize your website, develop a business page for Facebook or wonder what you need to do to make your website show up in search engine results pages (SERPS)… my book will show you how to do all of these things.
