There are numerous ways to measure if you are making an impact with your blog. A jump in raw traffic numbers, an increase in orders for your products, or inquiries about your services, but one less obvious measurement is the number of spam comments your blog receives.
Spammers target hot topics so when you see your spam comments soar, you’ll know you’re talking about something that is of interest. Today I experienced new book sales and over 60 new spam messages just since late last night. I guess that makes me an overnight success, right? Obviously, the topics of SEO, Social Media and video marketing are very HOT!
Social media growth continues to explode
Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn receive billions of visits monthly; in fact Twitter grew by more than 600% in 2009, while Facebook grew by 210% and LinkedIn by 85%. Hey, if Facebook were a country, it would be the fourth largest in the world!
Blogs indexed by Technorati number more than 133 million and 900,000 blog posts are created within a 24-hour period and YouTube served more than 75 billion video streams to around 375 million unique visitors during 2009. There just might be something to this social media thing after all.
Online video is HOT
- The average U.S. Internet user watches 186 videos per month.
- Facebook’s video views are up 239% in one year.
- Facebook users watched 245 million videos in May 2010 alone.
- More video was uploaded to YouTube in 60 days than all TV networks created in 60 years.
- 5. 19% of small business advertisers already use video — up from 8% last year.
Yes, these are hot topics because businesses that are using these tactics to drive traffic are seeing results. Like any marketing strategy, there is a right way to do things and a wrong way… if you don’t do it correctly, you will be disappointed in your results. Take the example of including the URL of your website in the description of your video; it gives viewers and search engines a link to your website. Without it yours is just one of a billion other videos.
